Waste deep snow

This excellent news item originally said "Three trampers had to be airlifted from the Tararua Ranges after waste
deep snow concealed their path."

Sadly they spotted and fixed the typo, which makes for a far less amusing story.

It's good to see the cops remaining such good sports about the odd search and rescue, my blood runs cold at the thought of New Zild adopting systems that some other countries have such as no insurance: no rescue

Tramping in winter? "Bloody good fun"
Amen

Agreed, no insurance, no rescue would be tough. But I used to know a guy who considered himself an experienced tramper, and thought it was ok to go into the bush on his own, relying on the fact that if anything happened people would come looking for him. He did very little to mitigate the potential for needing to be rescued.

These days, I think anyone who goes into the bush with inadequate gear, without some sort of tracking device/radio, and without filing a trip plan or telling someone of their intentions, should expect to get handed a bill once they are rescued.

Accidents happen. I think idiots should learn respect for the bush and the high cost of saving their dumb arses.
